Museum - Biograd

The Local Museum Biograd was founded in 1969. It is located on the sea front in the centre of the town, in the courthouse which was established by the Emperior Francis JosephI. in 1876.

The Homeland Museum of the City of Biograd contains several collections amongst which are the archaeological collection, collection of the Cargo from the sunken ship from the 16th century, the ethnographic collection, a Historical department and the collection of fine art paintings.

Due to its uniqueness the collection Cargo from the sunken ship from the 16th century definitely attracts the attention of most visitors. These exhibits were taken out from the sunken Venetian merchant ship that sunk in 1583 in the Pasman channel near the small island Gnalic.

The treasure was not discovered until 1967, which implies that it was hidden at the bottom of the sea from almost four centuries.

Amongst the items there were ship equipment and inventory and expensive trading goods like luxurious glass items:glasses, bottles, pitchers, bowls, and mirrors. It is presumed that they originate from the Murano workshops.

There were also magnificent candlesticks, wall and ceiling-hanging candlesticks, ceramic items, items for daily use and other objects.Amongst the most outstanding exhibits is the iron casket of large dimensions in which there were textile items made of silk damask, three long white shirts and eight woollen hats, all preserved perfectly. The cargo also contained various raw materials and semi-manufactured product like brass items, tin bars, balls of cinnabar and lead carbonate.
